Background: This gene encodes a member of the amelogenin family of extracellular matrix proteins. Amelogenins are involved in biomineralization during tooth enamel development. Mutations in a related gene on chromosome X cause X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008],
